Two months ago, in an interview with Playboy magazine, Tom Cruise gushed over his “extraordinary” wife and family life. Today, the actor is once again on the road to Splitsville. People was the first to break the news that the Rock of Ages star and his wife of five years, Katie Holmes, are divorcing.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Katie’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe said. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
A rep for Cruise issued a statement saying that Holmes filed the divorce papers. “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out,” Amanda Lundberg said.

Tom made a spectacle of himself during an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005. He declared his love for the former Dawson’s Creek star and jumped up and down on Oprah’s couch to express his love for Katie. “I can’t be cool. I can’t be laid-back,” Tom told Oprah. “Something happened and I want to celebrate it.”
Tom, 49, and Kate, 33, were married at an Italian castle in the fall of 2006. They have one child, 6-year-old daughter Suri. Tom also has two adopted children — Isabella, 19, and Connor, 17 — with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Tom was also married to actress Mimi Rogers. This is Katie’s first marriage.
