James Van Der Beek calls down time “a thing of the past”
New dad James Van Der Beek is adjusting to the fact that life with two kids is a lot busier.
James and wife Kimberly welcomed second child, son Joshua, in March and since that time, the two have said good-bye to any free time they might have had with just one child (daughter Olivia is 18 months).
James told PEOPLE, “It’s a lot of work. With one [child], you get a lot more down time. With two, down time becomes a thing of the past.”
But James isn’t complaining! Of fatherhood, he gushed, “It’s the best. I love it!”

He added, “The biggest surprise is how different they are right out of the gate They come out with their own thing. My son’s a thinker. You can tell already.”
James admits that he doesn’t necessarily want his kids to follow in his footsteps… as far as his career is concerned, anyway.
He revealed, “There’s no part of me that would ever push them into doing [acting] professionally. As a kid, it’s a great form of expression and it’s good to do it in a community level like a high school, but professionally I don’t know. I would encourage them to explore all kinds of possibilities.”
