In a recent interview with German weekly newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Katherine Heigl opens about about why she felt like a “bad mother” when she and husband Josh Kelley adopted daughter Naleigh (then 10 months) from South Korea in 2009.
Katherine admitted that she had a hard time earning Naleigh’s trust and bonding with her baby. She said, “People are always talking about the strong bond between mother and daughter, this magical connection – but we didn’t have that. [The early days with Naleigh were] the hardest time in my life.”
Katherine added, “I fought incredibly hard for my daughter to accept me as mother. Her rejection almost broke my heart.”
So she turned to work which Katherine said “made the already difficult process of getting closer take even longer. When I realized that, I immediately cut back on work. At first I blamed myself and thought I was a bad mother.”
Though the initial days were tough, Katherine doesn’t dwell on the past and instead looks to the future. She said, “I’d like to fly to South Korea with the family to show her the country that she comes from.”
