Dwyane Wade: On-duty Daddy
Dwyane Wade is an NBA star in his ninth season with the Miami Heat. He’s also a single dad (with sole custody) to his two sons, Zaire, 9, and Zion, 4. Guess which job takes priority?
Dwyane opened up to Parenting magazine about the importance of being a role model to his children and giving them his attention and affection. He said, “You never want your children to have to look outside of their parents for those two things.”
But Dwayne does have to travel a lot during the season, so he makes sure to stay connected to his sons through technology like Skype and texts, and good old fashioned phone calls. Especially when they’re in trouble!
He admitted: “Zion and Ziare occasionally do get in trouble, and they don’t always save it for when I’m home. Even if I’m on the other side of the planet, I get on the phone to set them straight… Then, when we’re together again, we sit down and have a more in-depth conversation. I want to make sure they always do the right thing, whether I’m there or not.”
And when he is there, Dwyane soaks up every moment with his boys. He said, “That’s my goal with my children: to make the most of the time we have together…. it’s all about attention and affection.”
