Madonna’s adoption snag
Madonna’s adoption of a 1-year old boy from Africa is running into a few snags, thanks to The Human Rights Consultative Committee. The group is ensuring that the Malawi laws “are not bent” for the popular American pop star.
“The laws of Malawi are clear that if one wants to adopt a child one has to stay with the child for at least 18 months for assessment,” HRCC’s chairman says.
A senior constitutional lawyer from Malawi tells People that, “Someone is bending the laws for Madonna. If Madonna wants to adopt this baby she has to stay here.” The human rights group is concerned that laws are being bent for Madonna because of her work in funding six orphanages and establishing another orphanage for those children with AIDS.
The pop star’s rep says that, “Madonna and her legal counsel have been working on her plans to adopt a baby from Malawi for quite some time. She had hoped to keep this very private and a family matter, but things didn’t go that way…Hopefully Madonna and family will soon be reunited once everything goes through.”
The child’s biological father, who gave David up for adoption because of poverty, wants Madonna to raise his son. “As David’s father I have no problem (with the adoption), so what is their concern? Are they jealous or what? What I want is a good life, a good education for my child,” he says.
What do you think? Is it right for the rules to be bent for Madonna because of the money she has donated to the country? I think her motives are pure and her heart is in the right place, however it is unfair to all the families that do not have the money and must follow the rules.
